Characteristics of the Body Diode

MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) are among the most commonly used components, yet their body diodes are rarely discussed. In fact, the body diode is a parasitic diode in the MOSFET, inherently existing due to the basic physical structure of its PN junction. Like ordinary diodes, the body diode possesses characteristics such as unidirectional conductivity, free-wheeling capability, and voltage clamping ability. These features enable it to prevent reverse current, avoid back electromotive force, and control voltage, thereby ensuring the safe and stable operation of devices.

Applications of Body Diodes

The characteristics of body diodes can play a key role in consumer electronic devices. Their applications serve different purposes in various scenarios, such as reversed power connections during charging, over-discharging of batteries, and interference in signal transmission.

In charging circuits, reversed power connections can cause severe damage due to reverse current flow. By incorporating a body diode, its unidirectional conductivity allows current to pass in only one direction while blocking reverse current, thereby protecting the circuit. This is particularly useful in fast-charging scenarios: since fast charging involves high speed and large current fluctuations, body diodes help stabilize the current and prevent overcurrent.

In battery protection circuits, excessive discharge can lead to battery degradation. Here, body diodes can block current when the voltage is too low, promoting uniform charging and discharging of battery cells. This ensures stable performance while extending the battery's service life. Additionally, in signal switching circuits, body diodes can filter out interference currents, enhancing stability and transmission accuracy.

In 2024, Heketai has comprehensively expanded its product line and established three subsidiaries in Nanchong, Sichuan, namely Shunxin Semiconductor, Nanchong Anhao and Nanchong Jingke, which are mainly responsible for the R&D and production of semiconductor packaging materials. The expanded product line will meet customer needs to the greatest extent.
